Unimed sets to offer herbal medicine

UNIMED to offer course in herbal medicine
THE vice chancellor of the University of Medical
Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), Professor Friday
Okonofua, has disclosed that the institution had
concluded all arrangements to introduce Herbal
Medicine as a course in the institution.
Okonofua made the disclosure during a media
interaction, saying that UNIMED would become
the first university in Nigeria to offer courses in
herbal medicine.
He said the course would take off by the next
academic session.
According to him, the decision to introduce
herbal medicine as a course of study at the
university was taken after considering the role
that herbs play in drug discovery.
He said a special and scientifically-based
curriculum would be designed for the course, so
that people would not mistake it for local
herbalists’ package.
Professor Okonofua said the future of Africa
rests on herbal drugs, and that the UNIMED
would establish a farm where herbal plants
could be produced.
“We believe here at UNIMED that there is need
to help to develop the practice of herbal
medicine; and it is part of our plan to introduce
herbal medicine as part of the courses to be
offered,” he said.
Okonofua also disclosed that the university had
been positioned for the treatment breast cancer
and other life-threatening diseases saying that
UNIMED had enough well-trained and
seasoned lecturers to offer both academic and
practical trainings in medical related courses.
